  Sra. Paniculata

My name is Sara Abella, born and raised in North Spain and living now in Barcelona. Under my brand "Sra. Paniculata" (translated as "Ms Babybreath") I create realistic paper flowers, inspired by the generosity and variety Mother Nature gives us.

My last name means "bee" in several languages, so I guess I was predestined to be sourrounded by flowers. Fan fact: I'm allergic to pollen. With no academic formation at all on Arts; in fact my skills at highschool were none, I discovered paper flowers and my artistic skills by accident.

As Hotel Manager in a touristic city as Barcelona my brain screamed every night for some kind of disconnection. So I tried different disciplines to put my hands at work and my mind at ease. As soon as I tried to make my first flower, a Begonia, I felt like falling into a black hole. A new universe opened into my hands. And so the story of a new life started.

Now I`m completed dedicated to replicate flowers in the most realistic way. I'm obsessed with the not so obvious details that will make you doubt if my work is made of paper or not. Most of the time I spend more time studying pictures and references of the real specimens than making them. But that is the price I'm willing to pay when to be proud of the front and back of my flowers. As a perfeccionist, I need to know that my flowers look real from every angle.

I guess what contributes to make my work so natural, is that I'm not afraid of using "what if..." everytime I want. What if I laminate the 90gr paper? I get the perfect texture for a rose petal. What if the 180gr paper takes a bath? If you let it dry after making a ball you will get the wrinkles of an Icelandic Poppy.

My ultimate goal is to make the observer look twice. Not only my work, but the flowers, plants and trees they may find any given day. I want you to slow down, to realize we are surrounded by beauty even on big cities (flowers love to bloom on concrete craks). To be kind to yourself, as not every flower is "perfect" but it is beautiful, and so are we.
